Drone / UAV / FPV Bearing Applications

Miniature bearings for flight-critical motion.

Drone propulsion motors, FPV platforms and camera gimbals place different demands on miniature bearings. Vohann helps engineering and purchasing teams connect those operating conditions with STT precision-bearing capability.

Where the
bearing works.

In a propulsion motor, bearings support the rotor and help maintain its running position under speed, propeller load and vibration. In a camera gimbal, the priority moves toward smooth motion, low starting torque, stiffness and repeatable positioning.

One label—“drone bearing”—therefore covers several mechanisms. Selection should begin with the location and duty cycle, not with a generic material or precision claim.

Three mechanisms,
different priorities

The bearing has to be matched to what the mechanism actually does inside the aircraft.

PROPULSION MOTOR

Rotor support at sustained speed

Review shaft size, rotor balance, radial and axial propeller loads, fit, lubrication and temperature rise.

FPV / RACING MOTOR

Compact, responsive and impact-aware

High rotational speed, frequent acceleration, low mass and crash or contamination exposure shape the trade-off.

CAMERA GIMBAL

Smooth low-vibration positioning

Starting torque, running accuracy, axial play, stiffness, noise and compact packaging affect image stability.

Define the bearing
from real conditions

A useful supplier discussion starts with measurable inputs. If some values are unknown, provide the assembly drawing, existing part or target motor configuration.

Installation envelopeBore, outside diameter, width, shoulder geometry, shaft and housing fits, available retention features.
Speed and duty cycleNominal and peak speed, acceleration, start-stop frequency, continuous or intermittent running time.
Loads and shockRadial load, axial thrust, propeller or payload forces, imbalance, landing and crash exposure.
Motion qualityAllowable vibration, noise, runout, starting torque and positioning repeatability.
EnvironmentDust, moisture, salt, temperature, cleaning practices and contamination during assembly.
Lubrication and closureGrease or oil, fill amount, open, shielded, non-contact sealed or contact sealed configuration.
Programme requirementsPrototype quantity, validation method, estimated annual volume, delivery location and target timing.

Design trade-offs
that deserve attention

Higher performance does not come from specifying the most extreme option in every category. The goal is a balanced specification for the actual mechanism.

Speed vs protection

Contact seals can improve contamination control but may add torque and heat. Shields or non-contact closures can support lower drag where the environment allows.

Preload vs heat

Controlling axial play can improve rotor or gimbal behaviour, but excessive preload increases friction and temperature.

Lubricant life vs torque

Grease type and fill amount influence starting torque, heat, noise and service life. More grease is not automatically better.

Precision vs system quality

A high bearing grade cannot compensate for poor shaft geometry, housing accuracy, mounting damage or rotor imbalance.

From requirement
to project supply

STT and Vohann hold distinct roles around the same customer project.

STT · MANUFACTURER

Miniature bearing engineering, manufacturing, inspection, quality control and product validation support.

VOHANN · AUTHORIZED SERVICE

Application, commercial and supply coordination.

Requirement clarification, specification review, samples, quotations, project timing and communication through volume supply.

Prepare a useful
bearing enquiry

You do not need every value before starting. A drawing, current part number or a clear description of the mechanism is enough to open the discussion.

01 · Identify

Drone type, motor or gimbal location, shaft size and current bearing reference.

02 · Quantify

Dimensions, speed, loads, temperature, vibration or noise target and environmental exposure.

03 · Stage

Concept, prototype, validation, pilot production or an existing production replacement.

04 · Supply

Sample quantity, annual demand, target timing and delivery country.

Define the next bearing around your aircraft.

Send a drawing, current part number, motor configuration or operating conditions.
